What Customers Say About Seagate FreeAgent Pro 500 GB USB 2.0/FireWire 400/eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive ST305004FPA1E3-RK:

I only need USB so I am o.k. So it it an either/or setup, so if you need both interfaces this unit requires you to remove and install a small module each time you switch between USB and firewire. with this feature. Cool style and looks.Great warranty for five years.Owned for over a year and it goes off when I shut down by PC at the end of the work day.I come into the office the next morning and it is on and running. I don't understand this odd behavior.I'll keep it as the warranty has four years left. The interface unit of either USB or firewire has to be installed by the user.

I'm sure the drive is fine, but you can find much better secure enclosures. Enclosure so flimsy that base broke from tower first time we transported it.

I then learned from Seagate's telephonic support that Seagate replaces a dead unit under warranty with a reconditioned unit and does not repair and return your original unit, thus causing you to lose ALL your drive contents unless you pay Seagate a lot to recover the data (or make backups of backups). This has been very upsetting and frustrating. Within 6 months of purchasing a new unit (worked great until then), the a/c power gave out when something internally fried for no reason. Email sent through Seagate's website to get a data recovery price quote went unanswered, as did a survey response to Seagate's customer support. I'm going to have Best Buy's Geek Squad recover the data (with Seagate's authorization) at much less cost than Seagate supposedly charges, and may not get another Seagate unit as it seems unreliable. Problem was that I had just restored my PC to factory settings to remove a driver problem and the FreeAgent was my only backup - reason I got it. Worked fine until I reconnected everything and the FreeAgent Pro unit then failed.

I cannot say enough to warn you away from them. These drives have caused us great frustration and lost productivity. From my examination of the units after the broken plug incidents, I came to see that the build on these drives is at a level of Chinese toys.

I had numerous USB hard drives holding my data - in different models, sizes, and capacities. Over the next 18 months, SIX of them failed. I own a full-time digital photo studio and make my living with it.

half just up and died, and in the other half it was the plugs that physically broke when we unplugged and replugged the drives while moving them to dust the shelf. (On the contrary, I've had great luck with ugly Fantom drives from TigerDirect). I wanted something that was standardized in physical size and capacity, and something nice-looking for my desktop.

On the advice of a local techie guru, I bought seven of these drives to handle all of my data.

warranty, I'm guessing it will perform well for some time. Also, I waited 48 minutes to talk to a human on the Seagate tech service line. It's very quiet and doesn't get too hot at all. We shall see. it doesn't recognize that the drive is attached and running. I've only had the unit for a month and a half or so.

I'm using it mostly to back my up music and video files. a major bore.Being that they give me a five yr. but so far I am very satisfied with the drive. I just drag and drop on the drive's icon, by-passing the software, which does what I need done anyway, transferring the file. I'm optimistic. I'm running it with a Mac mini and the transfer speed with my firewire is very fast.

I really like the design and look of the unit as well.My only problem is with the managing software that I got as a download from Seagate.
